This neuron model is based on a Ramon y Cajal drawing. He used a staining technique developed by C. Golgi to visualize one neuron from 100. Using this technique that neuron was “painted” with silver and then he could verify that the neurons are separated cells and not just one big tissue.
This portrayed neuron is painted with silver gray to remind the staining technique. The wings along its dendrites represent the “voyage” of the electrical impulse. The core of the neuron opens and reveals itself as an eye who observes some enigmatic event that produces happiness for it. That is why the electric impulse it produce, rises and flies with colorful wings.
